How this estimate works
- Your monthly budget is increased by annual inflation for the years until retirement: budget × (1 + inflation)^years. After retirement, withdrawals stay at that fixed monthly amount.
- The retirement target is the present value at retirement of month-end withdrawals over your chosen income period. With 0% return it is monthly income × 12 × income years. No remaining inheritance balance is targeted.
- The monthly investment rate is annual return ÷ 12. The same constant return is used to grow your existing savings before retirement and to discount withdrawals after retirement. Actual investment returns can vary.
- The funding gap is the retirement target less the future value of existing savings, with a minimum of zero. A fixed month-end contribution is calculated to close that gap by retirement. The projection includes this calculated monthly contribution.
- If retirement starts now, the fund requirement still applies. The calculator compares it with today’s savings and shows an immediate gap, without calculating monthly saving before retirement.
